Katie Elizabeth Brown: Artist Statement

Mythology connects us to our own cultural and religious origins, and unites humanity within a narrative of history.  Mythology is embedded in the work of artists from around the world and throughout time in the form of symbols; I choose to employ archetypal symbols and devices in my work as well.  Choice of media – serigraphy, beading, paint and embroidery –is a defining characteristic in the ideological underpinnings of my work.  Labor-intensive, methodical processes, like beading and embroidery, connect my work to the tradition of crafting and evoke the value of the work ethic, steeping my own work in the meditative processes that traditional crafters have used in many cultures throughout history.

My subject matter is influenced by mythology and mysticism of the Yoruba, which is a faith that originated in Nigeria and was carried into the new world and incorporated into hybrid faiths like Voodoo and Santeria.  In the Yoruba tradition nature is venerated as a vessel where deities and ancestors might reside.  In my work trees indicate nature’s connection to spirituality, spheres encapsulate the natural, unending order and fractured space indicates chaos, loss and disconnection.  Other works depict the creation myth of the Yoruba, a narrative rich in archetypal symbols that beautifully transcend the specifics of the myth.
