Katie Elizabeth Brown: Bio
When I was only a month old my family moved to Africa. We lived in Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana, where my father was completing his Ph. D in wildlife biology. I feel very privileged to have been exposed to a diverse cultural experience at such a young age because it has allowed me to become a more diverse person and it has influenced me to continue to engage in international studies.
After my family moved back to the U.S from Botswana, we lived in Colorado for two years before moving to Jefferson City, Missouri where I spent the majority of my adolescence. As an adult I traveled to Maastricht, The Netherlands where I studied art and trans-Atlantic slave studies. During the time I spent in The Netherlands, I traveled throughout Europe and parts of Eastern Europe immersing myself in art museums, cathedrals, new foods, new music, and an international group of friends.
Upon completion of my undergraduate degree, I immediately began working at two prominent art museums in Kansas City. I continued to work at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art for two and a half years. During this time, I had the fortunate experience of meeting Petah Coyne, a sculptor, and Ghada Amer, a painter and fiber artist, both based in New York City. I began assisting the artist Ghada Amer remotely while living in Kansas City. Amer sent canvases to Kansas City and myself and a few other women would complete the embroidery portions of the works. Shortly after meeting Petah Coyne and helping to install her show at the museum, I moved to New York and began assisting her in her studio. I worked for Coyne for eight months before moving on to a job as a Gallery Assistant and Registrar at the Jacobson Howard Gallery.
In the summer of 2007 I spent some time traveling around Yorubaland in southwestern Nigeria with my brother and his fiancé. I had been studying Yoruba culture and art and this trip was extremely influential to my artistic experience.
In February 2008 I moved to Dakar, Senegal. I lived with a family of two professional artists, Kan Si and Muhsana Ali and worked for a non-profit organization called "Portes et Passages." I assisted the organization with the planning for a holistic art center. Upon my return to the US in June 2008, I moved to Los Angeles where I worked as a professional artist, graphic designer and web designer. In 2009 I moved back to New York City where I am currently working on my art and web design.
